Deciding your Needs/Avonlea Recommendations

  1. Design a long-term plan for your farm storage needs. It is necessary to determine how many gross bushels of storage you will need to make your farm most efficient.
    1. If your farm produces mainly high volume crops such as Wheat, Oats, Barley, Sunflowers, Corn, etc., Avonlea recommends 60-80 bushels per acre of storage.
    2. If your farm produces mainly medium volume crops such as Canola, Flax, Soybeans, Edible Beans, etc., Avonlea recommends 30-40 bushels per acre of storage.
    3. If your farm produces a mixture of high and medium volume crops, Avonlea recommends 50-60 bushels per acre of storage.
  2. Decide what bin sizes will best suit the crops that you grow.
    1. Calculate how many acres of each crop you grow and what the expected yield will be. For example, if you grow 320 acres of Barley per year and expect an average yield of 70-75 bushels per acre, then a 22000-24000 bushel bin will fit well here.
    2. If you want to limit the size of some storage bins for crops like Canola, it is important to list this on your plan.
    3. If you want to limit the height of some storage bins for crops like Soybeans it is important to list this on your plan.
  3. Decide what you want your storage system to do for you.
    1. Store and handle dry grain. This requires minimal aeration and fan capacity.
    2. Store and handle tough grain that is within 2% moisture of dry values. This requires more planning with regards to aeration and fan capacity.
    3. Store and handle damp grain that is within 5% moisture of dry values. This requires careful planning with regards to aeration, fan, and bin capacity.
    4. The most important part of a good storage system is proper planning at the outset.
